Prior to WWII rich and poor of Britain were used to consume commodities from all around the world. Decades of global and imperial market had shaped the eating habits of the population and imported commodities, tea and sugar as well as Danish butter or Australian lamb were commonly found in British shops.
The war changed all that. The importations had to be drastically reduced and the resources had to be controlled. Restrictions and shortages modified food availability, without mentioning the increase of prices and the degradation of food quality.
